Introduction

The ( File ) Menu Bar Selection is usually the first item located on the leftmost part of the top of the window.

Just a small note. Drop-down selection menus can look different depending on what you are doing. An example is the "Save" selection will not appear on the drop-down until a document is first created or opened.

This selection will pop-down a selection menu when you click it with the left mouse button (or with the keyboard shortcut <Alt> <F>). Below is an example of the Microsoft Word File drop-down menu.

On the left is the menu displayed when a document is opened. On the right is the same menu when there are NO documents opened. As you can see the "opened document" version has selections which allow you to Save, Close and Print the open document where the other menu does not have these options which makes sense. You can't print a document if it is not there.

The pop-down selection menu is slightly different for every program, but many selections are almost always there.

The most used selections are the...

The above selections will now be discussed is detail.

File New

This selection allows you to create a new document. Every program is a bit different on how a document is created. Either a blank document will just be created or when applicable, a pop-up window will be displayed that allows you to select what type of new document you want to create.

File Open

This selection will open a new window which allows you to select an existing file from a list of files presented to you inside a white text box. If there are more files then can be displayed in the text box then a horizontal scroll bar will be placed by the computer on the right side of the box. The scroll bar has an up-arrow at the top and a down arrow at the bottom. You click on these arrows with your mouse to scroll the list up and down.

When you find the file you need, click on the file name with your left mouse button and then press the OK button.

The file you selected will then open inside the window and you will be able to use it.

File Close

This selection is also a very simple operation. It basically closes the document. If the document has not been properly saved, the computer will display a pop-up window that asks you if you want to save the document. You then make a selection by clicking on a button such as <OK> or <Cancel> and the computer performs your selection.

File Save / File Save As...

This selection allows you to save your document by displaying a pop-up window that has a text box where you type in a name for the document you are saving.

Note: All programs have a default file extension and most of the time they place that at the end of the file name for you. The extension is a period followed by 3 characters and is used to identify the file to the computer as belonging to a certain program. For example the Microsoft Word documents have the extension .DOC and that is always placed at the end of the file name when you save it.
