Adding an envelope to a document in Word 97 | Applications | Word97 | Tutorials |

Note: Word 97 will automatically add a name and address to an envelope if you already have it typed into the top part of a document. So, if you know you will be printing an envelope, take the few seconds to type in the name and address at the top of the document, and later when you make an envelope you will not need to retype it.

Move the mouse pointer to the menu bar at the top of the page until it is over the word Tools

Click with the left mouse button when the arrow is over the word "Tools"

A pop-down window will appear

move the mouse pointer over the selection "Envelopes and Labels" (the selection will turn blue) and click with the left mouse button.

The window "Envelopes and Labels" will appear

If you already have a name and address in your document, then you will see that name and address in the white "Delivery address" text box. If that box is empty then follow the instructions below to add the delivery address.

Move the mouse cursor inside the white text box below the words "Delivery address" and click the left mouse button. This will place the cursor inside the box. Type in the delivery name and address.

Next move the mouse cursor inside the white text box below the words "Return address" and click the left mouse button. This will place the cursor inside the box. Type your own name address as you want it shown on the envelope.

At this point, you can either print an envelope right away, or you can save the envelope inside the document to be printed later when the document is printed.

Note: You might now get a pop-up message "do you want to save the new return address as the default return address?" asking you if you want to use the "return address" for all new envelopes you create. If the name and address are correct and you want to use them in the future select "Yes". If you select No, then the next time you type in a return address you will again see the above message.

If you have an envelope ready and want to print it, you can place the envelope in the printer and on the computer screen press the "Print" button on the "Envelopes and Labels" window. The envelope will be send to the printer immediately. If the envelope does not print right away, look at the printer to see if the Ready light is flashing or if the FormFeed light is on. What happens sometimes is the printer will wait for you to feed the envelope or if you already have an envelope in the printer, it will wait for you to press the "Form Feed" or the "Ready" button.

You may also add the envelope to the document as the first page of the document. That way, the envelope will be saved along with the document giving you a record of where is was mailed. To do this, press the button "Change document" on the "Envelopes and Labels" window.

The envelope will be added to the document as the first page.

The easiest way to verify this has happened is to Select

File
Print Preview

from the top menu bar, and then look at the screen to see what the document looks like. You should see the envelope, and if you scroll the screen down, you should see the rest of our document. When you are done looking at the preview, you can press the "Close" button on the top of the preview screen.
