How to Create an Internet Connection | Applications | Netscape 3.0 | Tutorials |
Note: Prior to performing the operations shown on this page you should follow the instructions on the "Creating an internet connection in Windows95" page which allows you to set the Internet addresses needed to connect with your internet provider.
Make the connection to the Internet.
Depending on your setup this can be done by double clicking an a desktop icon that has your internet provider's name under the icon. Or, the connection might also be automatically established when you start the Netscape Navigator program in the next step.
Now start Netscape Navigator by double clicking on the Netscape icon
or by clicking Start on the toolbar,
Selecting Programs from the pop-up list,
and select "Netscape Navigator" from the next pop-up,
which will do one of two things depending on your version.
1) For versions 2.0 and 2.1 a new window will open showing the Netscape Navigator Group Window....locate and double click the "Netscape Navigator" icon.
2) For versions 3,0 and 3.01 as well as 3.01 Gold the folder selection will open several other selections allowing you to choose "Navigator" from the listed items. Just move the cursor over the words "Netscape Navigator" and click the mouse.
Now the program Netscape Navigator will open.
At the top you will see the menu bar
Click on the "Options" and select "Mail and News Preferences"
The "Preferences Window" will appear.
At the top of the window there are 5 tabs.
With the Mouse click on the "Servers" tab.
The Preferences Servers Window will appear.
Locate the "Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server" text box
and click inside it with the mouse. Then type the "Mail Server" Address as given to you by your provider.
.....This address is in the form of mail.myserver.com or mail.myserver.net
Locate the "Incoming Mail (POP) Server" text box
and click inside it with the mouse. Then type the "Mail Server" Address as given to you by your provider (this entry is identical to the entry above it on the screen).
Next locate the "Pop User Name" text box
and type in the login name given to you by your provider.
Note: sometimes providers require extra character to be inserted in front of your login. For example, if your login is myname123 they might require that you place some characters in front followed by an exclamation point and then then login, as in ppp!myname123 or p!myname123.
Next, locate the entry "News (NNTP) Server" text box
and click inside it with the mouse. Then type the "News Server" Address as given to you by your provider.
Finally click the OK button.
The preferences window will now close and you will be inside the Netscape Navigator window.
You are now done setting up your Mail and Newsgroup connections.
