General Information

The Microsoft product "SNA Server" is a LAN-to-Host Gateway designed to provide a method for connecting PC computers to mainframe computers operating with the SNA environment. It can support up to 5000 users and 30,000 simultaneous sessions.

ODBC support is provided for database integration.

• Hierarchical SNA Networks consist of  a mainframe, cluster controllers and logical units.

Terms

• ACF ( Advanced Communication Facility ) - an administrator tool
• BSC (Binary Synchronous Communication or Bisynchronous Communication)
• Cluster controller - used to control printers and terminals
• FEP ( Front End Processor ) - the communications controller sitting between the mainframe and the network.
• Host - The mainframe computer

Logon

Two accounts are required. One for logging on to windows NT and another for validating access to the SNA resources.

Notes

• MS SNA Server cannot act as a PU 5, and therefore cannot be used to build host subarea nodes.
• MS SNA Server does not support BSC.

Workstations

Workstations can connect to the SNA server using NetBEUI via Named Pipes, IPX/SPX, TCP/IP or Banyan Vines.
