Atlas CD-ROM Drive Installation | Atlas Main | CD-ROM Drives | »

The CD-ROM drive will fit into a half height 5.25 inch drive bay. If all the drive bays are occupied, remove a device to make room for the CD-ROM drive.
To Install the CD-ROM Drive:
1. Turn off the computer's power and remove the cover from the system unit.
2. If your computer requires mounting rails for the CD-ROM drive installation then install them in the manner used for the other drives. (Mounting rails are optional they can be purchased from your computer dealer.)
3. Connect the IDE cable to the CD-ROM drive.
- The (recommended) way of connecting the CD-ROM drive is to the secondary IDE controller on your motherboard or I/O card.
- The 1st alternate is to connect the CD-ROM to the IDE cable used by your IDE hard drive. Make sure the jumper on the back of the CD-ROM is set to the SL slave position and that the jumper on the hard drive is set to master with slave present. (Refer to your hard drive manual if necessary.)
- The 2nd alternate is to connect the CD-ROM drive to an IDE controller on a sound card. Use the factory default for the mode jumper. The jumper is set at the factory to the master (MA) or slave (SL) position. Either position is acceptable.
- If you already have a CD-ROM drive in your system and would like to connect your new drive as a second CD-ROM in the system, connect the two CD-ROM drives together.
4. Insert the CD-ROM drive into the empty drive bay, and fasten it in place with the supplied mounting screws.
5. Connect the IDE ribbon cable as determined in step 3 above.
Note: One end of the cable plugs into the IDE connector on back of the CD-ROM Drive. The other end comes from the secondary IDE connector on the motherboard, from the IDE connector on the hard drive, or from the IDE connector on the sound card. In all cases, make sure that pin 1 of the plug matches pin 1 of a connector. (The red stripe on the cable must line up with pin 1 of the plug or connector.)
6. Attach a cable from the PC's power supply to the connector on the back of the CD-ROM drive. The cable plug is keyed so that it can be plugged in only one way.
7. If you have an internal sound card, connect an audio cable between the CD-ROM drive's audio out jack and the sound card's audio input jack. (The supplied audio cable works with the drive but not all sound cards.)
8. Replace the computer's cover.
If you have two IDE connectors on your motherboard or I/O card, use the
supplied IDE ribbon cable and connect the CD-ROM drive to the secondary port
connector as shown.

2nd Alternate ConnectionIf you have one IDE connector on your motherboard or I/O card, the hard drive's dual IDE ribbon cable should be connected to the CD-ROM drive as shown. If your hard drive's IDE ribbon cable does not have a second connector, purchase one at your local computer store.
Note: Set the jumper on the back of the CD-ROM to the SL (slave) position. Set the jumper on the hard drive to MA (master) or MS (master with slave present).
If you do not have a spare IDE connector on the motherboard or if you cannot connect the CD-ROM to a hard drive, connect the CD-ROM drive to a sound card's IDE connector. Make sure that the sound card's IDE is enabled (See sound card manual.)
Note: Use the factory default settings for the CD-ROM mode jumper.
Installation as a Second CD-ROM
If you wish to connect the CD-ROM drive to a CD-ROM drive that is already in the system, use a dual IDE ribbon cable connected to the original CD-ROM drive as shown. If your CD-ROM drive's IDE ribbon cable does not have a second connector, purchase one at your local computer store.
Note: Use the mode jumper master setting for the CD-ROM drive that is connected to the middle connector on the dual IDE ribbon cable. Use the mode jumper slave setting for the CD-ROM drive that is connected to the end connector on the dual IDE ribbon cable.
