Troubleshooting
No available IDE connector on sound card or motherboard. Obtain a secondary IDE controller card, or an IDE controller card with both a primary and secondary connectors. CD-ROM does not respond even though power light comes on. If CD-ROM is connected to the secondary IDE controller on the motherboard
· Secondary IDE controller may be disabled or not working.
· Try another IDE ribbon cable (one that is known to work).
If the CD-ROM is slaved to a hard drive on a primary or secondary IDE controller.
· Check if CD-ROM is set to Slave.
· Check if hard drive is set to Master or Master with Slave
· If master hard drive is working but CD-ROM is not, the dual cable may have a damaged plug. (Unplug the CD-ROM and try using the same plug for the hard drive. If the hard drive also fails to work, replace the cable.)
If CD-ROM is connected to a sound card IDE
· Check if connector on sound card is labeled IDE.
· Check if sound card IDE is enabled (See sound card manual)
· Sound card IDE port may conflict with motherboard IDE port. Reassign the sound card IDE port if possible or disable sound card IDE port and obtain an IDE card with assignable IDE ports.
If the CD-ROM is connected to sound card IDE because primary and secondary IDE controllers already have two drives each
· Change the port address on the sound card to reflect a port address not already assigned to a primary or secondary IDE controller. A list of standard port addresses and IRQ's for up to four IDE controllers follows. (For the sound card IDE, try changing port addresses to 1E8/IRQ11 or 168/IRQ10).
Primary IDE: 1F0/IRQ14
Secondary IDE: 170/IRQ15
Third IDE: 1E8/IRQ11
Fourth IDE: 168/IRQ10
Note: If the port address on sound card cannot be changed, purchase a separate IDE controller card.CD-ROM works in Windows 95 but not in real DOS environment. Install the drivers in DOS environment using the 'Windows 3.x and/or DOS installation' procedure. CD-ROM worked at first, but now does not. Check for loose cable connections.
Try re-installing CD-ROM drivers. When booting up, a message says not enough drive letters. Make sure that a last drive statement appears in CONFIG.SYS file:
Example: Lastdrive= [last drive letter E to Z]
Note: Show the highest drive letter to which you have access. When using four or more logical drives, indicate the last drive letter.Cannot play video CD. To AUTOEXEC.BAT, add a /U switch to the smart drive statement:
Example: C:\DOS\smartdrv.exe /UCannot play video CD. Select the non-listed IDE CD option in OS/2 Warp.
