Introduction

Main Features
Your new CD-ROM drive fits into an open 5.25 drive bay slot on your computer. The drive's front panel (Figure 1) contains an open/close button and a power/busy light that comes on when the drive is active. All models include a head phone jack and volume control wheel. Some also include a play/skip button that allows you to play or skip the tracks of an audio CD. The rear panel (Figure 2) contains an audio output jack, a slave/master mode jumper, a power supply connector, and an IDE interface connector.

IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics).
This enhanced IDE CD-ROM drive has its own built in electronic controller. It can share a connection with another IDE drive, so you will not normally need to purchase a separate CD-ROM controller card. For example, you can plug the CD-ROM drive into an available IDE interface connector on your motherboard, to the spare connector on your IDE hard drive's ribbon cable, or to the IDE connector on your sound card.

Caution: Some sound cards have a proprietary connector that looks like an IDE connector. If you find is necessary to use the sound card's connector make sure that it is an IDE controller (refer to your sound card manual).

Operating the Drive

Open/Close Button
Press the open/close button to open the CD-ROM drive (Figure 1). The motorized tray should automatically open without assistance. (If the drive does not open, the ribbon cable may be plugged in backwards.) When placing a CD in the tray, put it in with the label side facing upward. This drive will accept audio CDs, video CDs, CD-ROM/XA, CD-I/Form 2, Karaoke CDs, photo CDs (single and multisession), and CD-Plus discs. To close the tray, press the open/close button again, or gently push the drawer inward. The power/busy light will come on when the drive is active.

Play/Forward Skip Button
If the front panel has a play/forward skip button, use it to play audio CDs and to skip to another music track with or without CD audio software. If you have this feature, the above open/close button may also have a pause feature for music playback.

Headphone Jack
The headphone jack on the front panel is a mini stereo jack suitable for headphones or powered speakers. You may also use it as an AUX output to a large stereo system.

Volume Control
The thumb wheel to the right of the headphone jack will control the headphone volume. Turn it all the way to the left before you put on your headphones.

Emergency Eject
If you need to open the drive when the system is powered down, insert one end of a bent paper clip, or some other small diameter wire into the emergency eject hole. The tray will come out far enough so that it can be pulled out by hand. The power should be off when performing the emergency eject procedure.

Handling CDs & CD-ROM Drive Precautions
This CD-ROM cannot operate at its rated speed with dirty or scratched discs, therefore:
- Always handle a CD by its edge and avoid touching its undersurface.
- Always store a CD in its case or envelope when it is not in us
- Always clean a disc with a soft cloth and do not use abrasive cleaners.
- Never place a CD on a hard or rough surface
- Never attempt to operate the CD-ROM drive in a vertical position.
- Never move the computer when the CD-ROM drive is operating.
