Configuring External SCSI Phasewriter DUALs

The Phasewriter has four configurable settings which must be correct for the drive to function properly. The settings are: LUN (logical unit numbering), SCSI ID number, termination and termination power. A switches on the rear of the unit configures these these settings. When a switch is in the up position, it is "ON" and when it is down it is "OFF". Each setting is explained below.

LUN Setting

This switch configures whether the drive is being used on a Macintosh (or compatible) or a PC (IBM or compatible) computer. The first switch on the switch block sets the PC/MAC setting. If the drive is connected to a Macintosh, the switch must be "ON". When the drive is connected to a PC, the switch must be "OFF". The default setting is "OFF".

SCSI ID (Address)

Each SCSI device connected to a computer must be identified with a unique number called a SCSI ID. SCSI IDs can be any number from 0 to 6 as long as it is not being used by any other SCSI device connected to the computer. The default SCSI ID is 4. Switches 2, 3 and 4 configure the drive's SCSI ID, as show below:

Termination "ON"

Note: Do not set switches 2, 3 and 4 "ON" at the same time; this will set the drive to SCSI ID 7 which will conflict with your SCSI host adapter/interface.

Termination

When using a SCSI host adapter and SCSI devices, they make a chain called a SCSI chain. One requirement when using SCSI is that the two ends of the SCSI bus must be terminated.

 External Devices Only:
If you have only internal SCSI devices (that is, an external Phasewriter and/or SCSI scanner, etc.), one end of the SCSI bus is the SCSI host adapter and the other end is an external SCSI device. First the SCSI adapter must be terminated; refer to the instructions for your SCSI adapter on how to turn its termination "ON" (this has probably been set "ON" by default). If the Phasewriter is the last on the chain device from the SCSI adapter, it must be terminated; this accomplished by setting switch 5"ON". The default for switch 5 is "ON", as shown below:

If you have other external SCSI devices, and the Phasewriter is NOT the last device on the chain from the SCSI adapter, termination must be "OFF" by setting switch 5 "OFF".

 Internal & External SCSI Devices:
Using internal and external SCSI devices is very similar to using only external SCSI devices; the last external device on the SCSI chain must have termination turned "ON". The difference is that the SCSI adapter inside your computer is no longer one of the end devices: the last internal SCSI device must be terminated along with the last external device (see above). Refer to the instructions that came with your SCSI adapter on how to turn its termination "OFF". Then make sure the last internal SCSI device also has termination turned "ON" (if this device is a Phasewriter drive, check the instructions on jumper settings).

Termination Power

Along with termination, a SCSI chain must be provided with termination power. Simply, at least one SCSI device on the SCSI chain must power the chain's termination. If termination is set "ON" for the Phasewriter, you should also turn termination power "ON"; this is done setting switch 6 "ON". If the Phasewriter is not the last device and does not need to be terminated, you can turn termination power "OFF", though it will not hurt to leave it on. The default is termination power "ON".
