General Description

ActiveX is a Microsoft brand name that refers to objects using the Component Object Model (COM) and are the third version of OLE controls (OCX). COM objects are supported under C++, Java and Visual Basic and provide integration of controls into Web browsers.

ActiveX controls are COM components written as DLLs and can be created using Visual Basic®, Visual C++, Visual J++, Scripting ActiveX controls using ECMAScript and JScript: Microsoft, Internet Client SDK and Powersoft's Powerbuilder

Typically the ActiveX control is build using Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC), but the ActiveX Library (ATL) can also be used.

ActiveX is supported by IIS 3.0 and by Internet Explorer, but not by Netscape Navigator 3.x (plug-ins are available from 3rd parties)

IIS3.0 provides the services through Active Server Pages (ASP).

ActiveX uses the Microsoft Authenticode which uses the X.509 v3 cryptography to provide security which looks at the control and determines if it safe to use.

REGSVR32 is used to register/unregister an ActiveX control (OCX). A better way is to get a program such as ActiveX Manager from 4developers.com which does the hard work for you.
