General Information

Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) -

A method of checking the validity of transmitted data. A mathematical operation is performed on a set of data using a predefined algorithm resulting in a CRC value. The CRC value is stored and transmitted with the data. The receiving device recalculates the CRC using the same algorithm and compares the original CRC to the regenerated CRC to verify they are the same.

Hard drives use this method to verify the accuracy of the recorded data. A CRC error detected on a hard drive usually implies that the data recorded on that sector has been corrupted. This type of problem can be fixed with programs such as the Gibson Research "Spinrite" program, which can be found in the "Hard Drive Utilities" page and the "Diagnostic Software" page.
