General Description

For "Cable Modem Hardware" see the "Cable Modem Hardware" page

Cable modems are communication devices used for connecting to the internet through a cable connection. The computer Digital Signals are converted to modulated RF signals as they are passed upstream to to the Internet connection and back downstream to the PC.

Two Connections are used to connect the PC to the cable provider. A Network 10Base-T connection goes from the Cable Modem to the PC. A second Coaxial connection is used to connect the Cable Modem to the wall cable plug.

The connection to the Internet is always ON, unlike a typical modem which requires the user to dial-up to the internet provider and make a connection.

Theoretical bandwidth in the 10Mbps range. Typical rates are probably 3 to 10 Mbps upstream and downstream.
