Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) -
DHCP is a protocol that allows a server to automatically allocate a unique IP address to a client. The IP address is provided on a lease basis for a fixed length of time.
The Microsoft DHCP uses a 4 step process that starts by having the client broadcast a request, any available servers then offer an address to the client, the client then broadcasts a request to the server for a lease, and the offering server assigns an address to the client.
DHCP servers must have static IP addresses.
Microsoft's NT Server 4.0 provides DHCP server functions.
