General Information -
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) - More Info @ ADSL.com Link
A technology used with modems for high speed Internet access
xDSL -
A term describing several Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technologies for modems
transmissing over copper wires. The transmission rate is about 8 Mbits/sec. xDSL covers
DSL, ADSL, HDSL, SDSL, RADSL and VDSL.
- DSL -
Digital Subscriber Line. Dial-up communications at 160Kbit/sec. coming and going.
- ADSL - ...More Info @ ADSL.com,
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. 1.5Mbit/sec to 9Mbit/sec incoming and 16Kbit/sec to
640Kbit/sec outgoing.
- BDSL -
see VDSL
- HDSL -
High-Bit-Rate Digital Subscriber Line. This method transmits using T1 or E1 over twisted
pair copper lines and uses no repeaters at 1.544 Mbps or 2.048 Mbps in bandwidths ranging
from 80 kHz to 240 kHz, over lines up to 12,000 feet in length (24 ga) by using two lines
for T1 and three lines for E1, each operating at half or third speed.
- SDSL -
Single Line Digital Subscriber Line. 1.544Mbit/sec duplex to 2.048Mbit/sec duplex upstream
and downstream.
- RADSL -
Rate Adaptive Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. 1.5Mbit/sec to 9Mbit/sec upstream and
16Kbit/sec to 640Kbit/sec downstream.
- VDSL - ( aka VADSL, BDSL, ADSL )
Very High Data Digital Subscriber Line. Downstream transmissions at 12.96 Mbps (1/4 STS-1)
4,500 feet of wire, 25.82 Mbps (1/2 STS-1) 3,000 feet of wire, 51.84 Mbps (STS-1) 1,000
feet of wire. Upstream transmissions from 1.6 Mbps to 2.3 Mbps
