Domain Names | Tech Info Home Page |
Domain Names are internet addresses used by Web Browsers to find a particular internet located server. A domain name is converted by a DNS server to the equivalent IP (Internet Protocol) address when it is typed in a browser's URL address text box.
Domain Names used to have a limit of 26 characters. Recently this has been increased to 67 characters. The 67 character limit includes the domain name (limited to 63 characters) and the .com (or other) extension which when added together brings the length to 67.
A domain name is registered for a cost of $35 per year and can be registered for a time period of 1 to 10 years.
According to Network Solutions...
...Here are some guidelines for valid domain name characters:
- Letters and numbers are always valid characters in domain names.
- Hyphens may also be used but cannot begin or end your domain name.
- Spaces and special characters are never permitted in domain names.
- The special characters include (but not limited to) these special characters: !@#$%^&*( )?"
The "www." and "http://" are not considered to be part of your domain name, and therefore does not count toward your total number of characters.
