Flash Memory | Tech Info Home Page |

General Information

Flash Memory is a type of re-writable memory stored in EEPROM. It has the ability to save data and to hold it after power is removed. It is implemented as a storage medium in devices such as digital cameras, MP3 music players, handheld PCs, and other devices.

Flash Memory is similar to programmable ROM (EEPROM) with one exception, when the data is erased, it is done in one bulk operation instead of erasing each individual byte.

Flash Memory data can move either serially or in blocks (parallel). Parallel data transfers are done with the aid of FFS (Flash File System) and FTL (Flash Translation Layer) software. DataFlash ATA memory cards perform these transfers in hardware and do not need FFS or FTL software gaining a speed advantage over the other flash cards.

It comes in the following types.
