Troubleshooting
|
General Information -
| Flat Panel Monitors, also known as Flat Panel Displays (FPD) |
 |
This is an example
of the CTX PV 751
Flat Panel Monitor |
If you are looking to buy Flat Panel Monitors or need tech support/drivers go
to the "Flat Panel
Monitors" Hardware Page.
Properties -
- Screen Size - Measured in inches, as '14.1 inches'.
- Input - RGB Analog ( 15 pin mini D-sub connector ) or DVI-V digital
( 24 pin DVI-V connector ), MDR (mini D-Ribbon)
- Resolution - Measured in dots horizontally and vertically, as in
800x600.
- Color Depth - Measured in "number of colors", as in
"256 colors", "millions of colors" or sometimes
using the bit notation as in "16-bit" or "32-bit.
- Display Technology - One of the technologies listed below.
Sometimes the technology name such as DSTN is used while other times the
technology type such as "active matrix" or
"passive-matrix" is used.
- Brightness - A measurement of the display brightness measured in nits,
as 200 nits.
- Contrast Ratio - A measurement of how well dark
and light colors are separated. A higher contrast has a sharper separation
between dark and light areas. It is shown as a ratio such as 150:1 or 300:1
.
- Refresh rate - Measured in Hertz, as in
60HZ. This tells you how many times the screen is refreshed each second. A
slower refresh rate can cause flickering.
- Viewing angle - Measured in degrees.
Screens that allow for a larger viewing angle can be seen better from
viewers that are not sitting directly in front of the screen.
- Power consumption - typically 40W
- Pixel Pitch - A value of the distance between the display dots. Typical
values are 0.28mm and a smaller number is better.
Types of Technology -
- DSTN ( Double Super-Twisted Nematic ) -
- FRSTN ( Fast Response Super-Twisted Nematic ) -
- HPA ( High-Performance Addressing ) -
- TFT ( Thin Film Transistor ) - Also known as active matrix
- LED ( Light Emitting Diode Arrays ) -
- TFEL ( Thin Film Electroluminescent Displays ) -
- ECD ( Electrochromic Displays ) -
- TCD ( Thermochromic Displays ) -
- PALC ( Plasma Addressed Liquid Crystal Displays ) -
- MOEMS ( Micro-Optical Electromechanical Systems )
These technologies are broken down into passive matrix and active matrix.
TFT is of the active matrix type and the others are passive matrix.
The TFT technology is the best. It provides the fastest response and the
widest viewing angle.
Mounting -
Types of Mounting - To buy a Wall Mount go to the Wall
Mounting Products page.
| Bases - Base that attaches to the bottom of the
monitor and allows it to stand freely on the desktop. This does not need
any mounting. |
|
| Arms for vertical surfaces - The arms are
connected to Wall Mounts which are securely fastened to Slat Wall
Brackets. Slat Wall Brackets are designed for specific manufacturers'
slat walls |
 |
| Desk Clamps - Attaches to worksurfaces such as
desk edges using a U shaped bracket that has hand operated screws. This
configuration can be easily moved to another location. |
 |
| Grommet Mounts - Attaches to worksurface through a
hole on the desk and has a bolt going through the hole with a nut at the
other end holding it in place. |
 |
| Slot Mounted - slides into a slot on an existing frame |
|
| Pole Mounted - The monitor mount has a round base that
attaches to a vertical Rod much like a pipe and is affixed at the proper
height by sliding the mount to the desired position and tightening |
|
Connectors -
The Video Input can be either Digital or Analog, each of which has its own
type of connector.
- D-Sub mini 15 pin (HD-15 connector) for CRT monitor. This is the
same connector used by regular computer monitors
- DVI Connectors -
| DVI-I
Analog/Digital |
DVI-D

DVI-A
Analog |

 |
 |
- Digital Flat Panel (DFP) 20-pin Port uses the MDR20
connector- This is a pure "Digital"
connector.

- DB-44 connector for flat panel displays
- Digital Monitor Interface (DMI)
- VESA Plug and Display (P&D) digital-monitor interface - It combines a
digital interface and a new analog interface in a 34-pin connector that also
contains USB and IEEE 1394
DFP and the digital portion of P&D are logically and electrically
compatible. Both use the PanelLink TMDS (transition-minimized differential
signaling) technology and support DDC (display data channel).
- Sony's Gigabit Video Interface (GVIF) -
Standards -
Flat Panel Monitors are guided by the Video
Electronics Standards Association ( VESA )
organization, which is comprised of over 300 high-tech member companies who
work on standards for the high tech video electronics.
- VESA Flat Panel Monitor Physical Mounting Interface (FPMPMI)
Standard - It defines physical mounting interfaces for flat panel monitors,
corresponding standards for flat panel monitor mounting devices and
associated cable, cable connectors and power supply location guidelines.
- NEMA 4/12 (IP52/56) -
