Global Positioning System (GPS) -
A service based on a network of 24 Navstar satellites orbiting at about 11,000 miles above the earth and maintained by the U.S. Defense Department. These satellites transmit round-the-clock, worldwide, all-weather data that allow GPS receivers to calculate position, velocity and atomic-clock time. Completed in 1994, GPS is the most accurate radio navigation system in the world.
