General Information - 

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) -

An emerging IETF protocol technology. It is a frame-based transport for Virtual Private Networks using routed networks. Tags are used by routers to identify packets which allows the next router to pass on the packet without having to perform lookups. MPLS can encapsulate more than one protocol.
