General Information

Plug-N-Play (PnP) is a computer technology used in describing the ability of a hardware device to compare hardware settings of other devices and then use this information to configure itself as to not conflict with the other devices.

A computer operating system can also be PnP compatible. Both Windows 95 and 98 are PnP enable, unlike Windows NT which has no native PnP capabilities.

PnP hardware are not capable of detecting settings of older style ISA cards which can cause problems with overlapping settings.

Some people have called the technology Plug-and-Pray because in the early stages of its development it did not work as advertised..
