General Information -

Quality of Service (QoS) -

QoS Forum describes it as follows : "The focus of QoS is providing predictable service (service defined as the share of available capacity) during periods of congestion. It is the periods of congestion that are the target of QoS. Being able to measure and report on service quality is also an important attribute of QoS solutions."

Standards -

• Differentiated Services (Diff-Serv) - defines how IPv4 type-of-service (ToS) / IPv6 Traffic Class is used
• Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) - lets applications adjust its QoS needs
• 802.1p - Allows a packet to use 3 bits to mark a QoS packet at Layer 2.

Implementation - 

• Cisco - QoS Policy Manager (QPM)
• Nortel - Optivity Policy Services (OPS)
• 3Com - Transcend Policy Service
