General Information -
UDF ( Universal Disk Format )
A new file system which supports rewritable CD formats such as CD-RW, DVD-ROM and DVD-Video. UDF uses packet writing to allow the user to add information to a rewritable disk incrementally. It is also capable of erasing files and re-claming the information afterward.
The standard windows operating system uses the ISO 9660 file system to read CD disks.
UDF also allows a recorded disk to be read by both Macintosh and PC computers.
The two versions of UDF are...
- UDF 1.02 ( DVD-ROM and DVD-Video discs )
- UDF 1.5 ( supports CD-R and CD-RW )
Windows 98 works with UDF 1.02.
UDF is implemented by CeQuadrat's PacketCD and Adaptec's DirectCD.
UDF Readers -
Adaptec -
A free "UDF Reader" is available for download from the Roxio (previously Adaptec) site. This reader allows some MultiRead CD-ROM drives to read UDF formatted CD-RW discs (such as those written with DirectCD) under Windows 95, 98 and 98 SE, Windows NT 4.0.
UDF can be downloaded from the Adaptec web site.
Adaptec's DirectCD writes CD-R and CD-RW discs in the UDF 1.5 format.
Note : When you read back a rewritable disk on regular CD drives, your drive might not be able to read the disk if the recording session was not "Closed". The same disk can be read with no problem on the rewritable drives even when the session is open.

Note:
The UDF Reader (version 5.1.1.213) is included with DirectCD 5.1, so if you have Easy CD Creator Platinum 5.1 or Basic version 5.11 or later you do not need to download this file.
Enables some MultiRead CD-ROM drives to read UDF formatted CD-RW discs (such as those written with DirectCD) under Windows 95, 98 and 98 SE, Windows NT 4.0 SP3 or higher and Windows 2000/XP. udfread_v5.1.1.213_inst.exe:
Once installed, you do not need to take any special steps to activate the UDF Reader; it is constantly active in the background, waiting for you to mount a UDF disc. This is a free download for the convenience of users who do not own Easy CD Creator. However, Roxio only provides technical support for the UDF Reader if you purchased Easy CD Creator, and have a valid Tech Support ID (TSID) that came with the product. If you do not have Easy CD Creator, we do not provide technical support for this product.
