General Information -
Uniform Resource Locator (URL)
URLs have the following form
for HTTP:
type: //host[:port]absoluteAddress
- type - can be : File, FTP, Gopher, HTTP, Mailto, News, NNTP, Prospero, Telnet, WAIS
- host - is a normal internet address in the form of dotted decimal or a named internet address
- port - the optional port defaults to 80 if not specified
- address - is the complete path to the address desired
A typical example would be the URL address of this site which is
http://www.techadvice.com/
Alternately you can also access the URL by typing the equivalent IP address if you know it. For example, currently the techadvice.com URL IP address is 64.85.11.43. You can therefore access techadvice.com using the IP address as follows
http://64.85.11.43/
The IP address can be useful in case of DNS (Domain Name Server) failures, which cause the browser to be unable to find a given URL.
Performance is monitored with the Netstat command prompt utility or with the NT Performance Monitor
