General Information

Video conferencing is performed by using two computers which are connected to each other through the internet. Each computer has a video camera, a microphone and special software to allow video conferencing to take place.

The H.323 standard is used for audio and video processing. The T.120 standard can also be used to share documents. With H.323 one participant at a time is usually in control of the transmission.

Audio is processed using the G.711 or G.723 formats.

Video uses H.261 or H.263. The video image format is the QCIF (Quarter Common Interface Format)

The H.320 standard offers additional connectivity using ISDN. With H.320 you can have all participants shown simultaneously.

The H.320 and H.323 formats are usually not compatible with each other but can be made to work together with special software.

Hardware such as the MCU (Multipoint Control Unit) are used for connectivity to clients along with server software.
