In Windows 95, 98, and Me, the Registry is stored in the USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT hidden files located in the Windows directory

In Windows 2000 and XP, the Registry is stored in several Hives, located in the \windows\system32\config and \Documents and Settings\{username} folders.

In NT the files are in the WinNT folder
