Error Message "Fatal Exception Error 0E at 0028:BFF88112" during shutdown, win 98se
1) see the Gateway site for one fix
2) Might be caused by Norton Anti-Virus
3) Lower your Video Acceleration
4) It might be caused by a screen saver. Try disabling the screen saver to see if the problem goes away.
5) Try disabling the Fast Shutdown in MSConfig.The Gateway Fix is as follows: ( the information below was copied from the Gateway site)
- Search the hard disk for Apmsgoff.reg and Apld_run.reg, then merge each file into the registry.
- On your screen, locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, point to Find, then click Files or Folders.
- In the Find: All Files window, on the Named line, type: Apmsgoff.reg, verify the Look In box is set to C:, then click Find Now.
- Once you find the file double-click the file.
- It asks you if you are sure you want to add this information to the Registry, click Yes.
- When the addition is complete, click OK.
- In the Find: All Files window, on the Named line, type: Apld_run.reg, then click Find Now.
- Once you find the file double-click the file.
- It asks you if you are sure you want to add this information to the Registry, click Yes.
- When the addition is complete, click OK.
Explanation of what the REG files exactly do:
- Apmsgoff.reg - disables the DOS auto-protect message window that displays when shutting down Windows
- Apld_run.reg - adjusts the load timing of the auto protect agent
- Modify the Config.sys to add x=b7ff-bfff to the C:\Windows\Emm386.exe line in the Config.sys.
- On your screen, locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, click Run.
- In the Run dialog box, type Sysedit and click OK.
- In the Sysedit window, click the C:\Config.sys title bar.
- Add the following lines:
Files=150
Buffers=60, 0
Stacks=12, 256- Change the following line in the Config.sys: Device=c:\windows\emm386.exe noems.
- Place the blinking cursor at the end of the line and press the space bar once.
- Type x=b7ff-bfff.
- The line should look like this: Device=c:\Windows\Emm386.exe noems x=b7ff-bfff.
- Close the Sysedit window by clicking the X in the upper-right corner of the screen and answer YES to saving the file.
- On your screen, locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, click Shutdown. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart the Computer and then click Yes to restart the computer.
- Disable Norton Anti-virus floppy access on shutdown:
- On your screen, locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, point to Programs, Norton Anti-virus, then click either Norton Anti-virus or Norton Anti-virus 2000.
- In the Norton Anti-Virus window, click the Options button.
- In the Options dialog box, click the Auto-Protect tab.
- On the Auto-Protect tab, click the Advanced button.
- Clear the Check floppies when rebooting the computer and the Check floppies for boot viruses upon access checkboxes, then click OK.
- In the Options dialog box, click OK.
- Close Norton Anti-virus.
- On your screen, locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, click Shut Down.
- In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, select Restart, then click Yes.
- Install Windows 98 SE shutdown patch via Windows Update or loaded from Restoration CD if applicable:
Note: Desktop Restoration CD 10.5 and Portable Restoration CD 3.6 and later have the Windows 98 Second Edition patch located on the Restoration CD.
- Restoration CD
- Place the System Restoration CD in the CD-ROM drive.
- In the browser window, click the Software tab.
- On the Software tab, click Win98SE Shutdown Supplement.
- Follow the installation instructions.
- In the System Settings Changed dialog box, click Yes.
- Windows Update
- Connect to the internet via your internet provider.
- On your screen, locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, point to Programs, then click Internet Explorer.
- In the Explorer windows, from the Tools menu, click Windows Update.
- In the Windows Update dialog box, select the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown supplement dialog box, click the Download button, then click the Start Download button.
- In the License Agreement dialog box, click Yes.
- Once supplement has completed, click Yes to restart the computer.
Note: If you're uncertain if the shutdown patch is installed follow the instructions below.
- On your screen, locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, click Run.
- In the Run dialog box, type: Msconfig, then click OK.
- In the System Configuration Utility window, click the Advanced button.
- If Disable Fast Shutdown, typically the third option from the bottom, is listed as an option, then the patch is not installed
