Error Message "A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C0006EB2 in VXD VMM (01)+ 00005EB2 or 0028:C000B28A in VXD VMM(01)+ 0000A28A" with TNT2 based Video Cards Win98/98se/(ME)

1) The error "0028:C000B28A" can be solved by installing the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers from the Via website.

2) This problem also seems to center around the TNT2 based video cards. It usually happens when playing games such as half-life just about when the computer is about to change the video mode or resolution.

Troubleshooting

Adjust the video acceleration

Right click My Computer icon on the desktop
select properties
click the performance tab on the top of the window
Click the graphics button on the button of the screen, you will now see a slide bar.
click on the bar and move it all the way to the left
click the OK button repeatedly until the window closes
then reboot the computer.

After this change see if the problem goes away. 

Solutions:

1) Try updating your video card driver

2) Change settings in the BIOS.

Go into BIOS, Chipset Features, 
1) change the AGP Aperture size option to 8meg
2) Disable the Video Ram Cacheable option

Other Issues

• This could be a hard drive problem. Check your free disk space to make sure there are at least 100MB free more if possible. It could also be caused by manually setting the cache to a smaller amount then what might be needed.
• There might be a problem with the driver or DirectX and the video mode. If you are using a higher mode such as 1024x768, try changing it to 800x600 or lower and see what happens.
• There is a remote chance that a problem or interaction with the CD-ROM or a CD-RW drive and the associated software is causing the problem.
• Use Resource Meter to check your resources. If they are lower then 30% use MSCONFIG to temporarily disable some startup programs and see if that helps.

Some Conclusions

• This is most likely caused by the AGP functionality of the card and the interaction with the drivers. 
• It is probably most likely to happen with TNT cards.
• We've seen it in Windows 98 and 98SE.
• Make sure you do a ScanDisk and Defrag on your hard drive.
• You might want to control your own virtual memory if your RAM is not enough to operate well with windows. 
  Right Click My Computer select Properties click the Performance tab then Virtual Memory select "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings", give it a value. This is tricky and not recommended unless you know what you are doing. It is only a suggestion. Its always better to simply get more RAM.
