Installing Windows 2000 Pro - ( on a new hard drive )

In this example, the boot disks are used to install windows 2000 on a hard drive, and all the previous contents are wiped out. This is not the upgrade method which keeps the contents of the hard drive. This method is equivalent to installing on a brand new drive. To create new boot disks go to the Boot Disks page.

Using the Boot Disks

  1. Turn off the computer
  2. Place the Boot Disk #1 in the disk drive
  3. Turn on the computer, a blue screen will appear.
  4. After a short time a message will appear telling you to put in Disk 2. Put in disk #2 and press Enter
  5. After a short time a message will appear telling you to put in Disk 3. Put in disk #3 and press Enter
  6. After a short time a message will appear telling you to put in Disk 4. Put in disk #4 and press Enter
  7. A window will appear as follows
    Windows 2000 Professional Setup

If you want to use an existing partition, it must have a minimum of 632 megabytes of free space. In the above example, the partition has 571MB and it can not be used.

In this example, the existing partition will be deleted as follows:

The cursor will wait on the "create partition..." line for you to enter a value. A value is already entered by the computer for you and you can accept that if you like.

Press the ENTER key to create the partition and continue

Now the screen (as in step 11) will show a new drive C partition as Unformatted

Press the Enter key to INSTALL windows in this partition

The partition you selected is not formatted. Setup will now
    format the partition.

Use the UP and DOWN ARROW keys to select the file system
you want, and then press ENTER.

If you want to select a different partition for Windows 2000,
    press ESC.

Format the partition using the NTFS file system
Format the partition using the FAT file system

In this case the NTFS is selected, and the ENTER key is pressed to continue

A screen will appear showing the progress of the formatting

    Windows 2000 Professional Setup

Please wait while Setup formats the partition
    C: New (Unformatted ) ........2012 MB
on 2015 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi.

    Setup is formatting.....  49 %

When the formatting is done, the computer will examine the hard drive.

Next the windows files will be copied to the installation folders.

A progress bar will appear as the files are copied.

After a short time you will get a message to remove the floppy drive and the computer will reboot.

Leave the CD in the drive.

After the reboot you should see a GUI window. and windows should start loading.

The Windows 2000 Setup "please wait..." window will show.

At this point you wait for a while as files are being copied. ( at least 10 minutes)

The Regional Settings Screen will appear. You can change settings or press the Next button to continue.

Next a window will appear that asks for your name and organization. Type in the information and press the Next button

Next a window will appear asking for the 25 character Product Key. Type this in and press the Enter key. The product key is located on the back of the CD jewel case and its printed on an orange label.

Next a screen will appear where you can type in a computer name (one is provided by default and you can use that), and the password (and verification ) for the administrator account.

Type in a password in both boxes and press the Next button to continue

The Date and Time screen will appear, you can adjust the entries if needed and then press the Next button to continue.

You can click the down arrow to select a new date. This presents you with a calendar which seems to be a bit flaky, by showing dates such as 9999 and 12100. Its probably best to first click on the Year within the white text box and change it to the correct year, then use the drop down to select the month.

Even when properly selected the bottom of the calendar insists on the year (as in this example being 2000) as being 12200.

Next the network settings will be installed.

If your computer has a network card, you will have to select a domain or a workgroup

Make a selection and press Next to continue

Finally, another window will appear that shows the "Performing Final Tasks" screen.
